Teach one idea, one worked example, and one thing each person does themselves. Ask every person to explain it back, in their own words. What they cannot explain back is what you did not teach. Weak approach Explains how models are trained, shows three different tools on the phone, and then takes questions for ten minutes. Nobody in the room has touched the phone at the end.
Stronger approach Picks one idea and works through a single example on the phone in front of them. Then hands the phone round so everybody does it once, and asks each of them to say it back.
Why the stronger approach works The strong one fits half an hour and leaves each person able to do something. Three tools is a talk with a phone in it.
Try a changed situation You have shown your mother how to pay the electricity bill on her own phone. Which rule still applies?
Make something yourself Write a one-page plan to teach one idea to five people in a room. Teach it, then write what each of them could and could not explain back to you.
