Most numbers reach you second-hand. The page that repeats a figure rarely says what was counted. Without that, you are passing on a guess.

You can say what a number counted, who counted it and when, before you pass it on.

Users, members and sign-ups are three different counts, not one number.
Read the page the figure came from, not the page that repeated it.

Task

A forwarded message says a job app has forty lakh users in Bihar.

Weak approach Searching the app's name and finding two news pages carrying the same forty lakh. Both look independent, so the figure is passed on as checked.

Stronger approach Opening the company's own page. Forty lakh is downloads since 2019, across India, counted by the app store.

Why the stronger approach works The strong answer found what was counted, who counted it and when. All three changed the meaning.

Try a changed situation A stall owner says three hundred people came yesterday. His bank slip shows one hundred and eighty payments. What do you do first?

Make something yourself Take one number an assistant gave you this week. Write what it counted, who counted it, when, and where you checked. If you could not find all four, write that.
