You will learn to

Use an assistant to understand official wording, and take eligibility, dates and forms from the department's own page.

Why this matters

Official language is the barrier, not the scheme. An assistant is genuinely good at the wording and cannot be the one that decides whether you qualify or when to apply.

Three things to remember

  • Wording from the assistant; eligibility, dates and forms from the portal.
  • Ask for it in your language, then say it back in your own words.
  • Write the questions you will ask at the office window.

Task

A pension form asks for copies of proof of residence, signed by the applicant.

Try the judgement yourself

Both answers respond to the task above. One of them does the job better. Which, and why?

Make something yourself

Take one real form or scheme notice near you. Write what it is asking in your own words, and list the two things you will confirm on the official page before applying.

A useful starting pointFour things: the hard phrase, its plain meaning, the two facts to confirm, the page.
