Pinned above the desk. Three cases I do not take. Each one has a place to go, and the days that place is open.

Case 1. Which tablet to take, and how much. Twice a month someone brings a test report or a photo of a strip. I do not read it into the assistant, and I do not name a medicine. It goes to the primary health centre on the main road. The doctor sits there on Monday and Thursday mornings. I will write the person's questions on a slip for that visit.
मामला 1. कौन-सी गोली लेनी है, और कितनी। महीने में दो बार कोई जाँच की रिपोर्ट या पत्ते की फ़ोटो लेकर आता है। मैं उसे सहायक में नहीं पढ़ता, और किसी दवा का नाम नहीं लेता। यह मुख्य सड़क वाले प्राथमिक स्वास्थ्य केंद्र जाता है। डॉक्टर वहाँ सोमवार और गुरुवार की सुबह बैठते हैं। मैं उस मुलाक़ात के लिए उनके सवाल एक पर्ची पर लिख दूँगा।
Case 2. Whether to sign as guarantor on a relative's loan. This came up three times at the start of the season. I do not say yes or no, and I do not ask the assistant what the paper means. It goes to the bank branch beside the post office, on a weekday before three. Ask for the manager's desk, not the counter. I will help fill the visit slip if asked.
मामला 2. किसी रिश्तेदार के कर्ज़ में ज़ामिन बनने का दस्तख़त करें या नहीं। मौसम की शुरुआत में यह तीन बार आया। मैं न हाँ कहता हूँ न ना, और न सहायक से पूछता हूँ कि काग़ज़ का मतलब क्या है। यह डाकघर के बगल वाली बैंक शाखा जाता है, किसी काम के दिन तीन बजे से पहले। काउंटर नहीं, मैनेजर की मेज़ पूछें। कहें तो मुलाक़ात की पर्ची भरने में मदद कर दूँगा।
Case 3. What to write back to a police notice about a neighbour's complaint. It came once, and it will come again. I do not draft the reply, even a polite one. It goes to the free legal aid desk at the district court, on Tuesday and Friday, eleven to one. Bring the notice and one identity paper.
मामला 3. पड़ोसी की शिकायत पर आए पुलिस के नोटिस का जवाब क्या लिखें। यह एक बार आया, और फिर आएगा। मैं जवाब का मसौदा नहीं बनाता, चाहे कितना ही नरम हो। यह ज़िला अदालत की मुफ़्त कानूनी मदद वाली मेज़ पर जाता है, मंगलवार और शुक्रवार, ग्यारह से एक। नोटिस और एक पहचान का काग़ज़ साथ लाएँ।
If I am not sure which side of the line a case sits, it is on the other side. I say so, and I say where it goes.

Each case opens with how often it really came: twice a month, three times, once. Every place has a road or a building, and the days it is open.
हर मामला इस बात से खुलता है कि वह सचमुच कितनी बार आया: महीने में दो बार, तीन बार, एक बार। हर जगह के साथ सड़क या इमारत है, और उसके खुले रहने के दिन।

Case 1 refuses to name a medicine, case 2 the yes or no, case 3 the reply itself. Each refusal names the assistant as the thing not used.

Every case ends with a place, a day, and one thing the desk still does: the slip, the form. The closing line says what happens when the line is unclear.
हर मामला एक जगह, एक दिन और एक ऐसे काम पर ख़त्म होता है जो मेज़ फिर भी करेगी: पर्ची, फ़ॉर्म। आख़िरी पंक्ति बताती है कि सीमा साफ़ न हो तो क्या होता है।
