Lead a batch and hand it on

Sheet for the person building the sign-reading set. Batch: 350 photos of shop signboards, Sangli, taken from the street on a phone, labelled 4 to 12 September 2026. Two labels per photo: script and readability.

बोर्ड पढ़ने वाला सेट बनाने वाले के लिए पन्ना। बैच: दुकानों के बोर्ड की 350 तस्वीरें, सांगली, सड़क से फ़ोन पर ली हुई, 4 से 12 सितंबर 2026 तक लेबल लगे। हर तस्वीर पर दो लेबल: लिपि और पढ़ने लायक है या नहीं।

Rules used. Script, guideline line 2: Devanagari, Latin, or both, by the letters painted on the board. Readable, line 5: yes if a person standing across the road could read the shop's name, no otherwise. Close calls were decided on those two lines and nothing else.

लगाए गए नियम। लिपि, दिशानिर्देश की पंक्ति 2: देवनागरी, रोमन, या दोनों, बोर्ड पर रंगे अक्षरों के हिसाब से। पढ़ने लायक, पंक्ति 5: हाँ, अगर सड़क के उस पार खड़ा व्यक्ति दुकान का नाम पढ़ सके, वरना नहीं। नज़दीकी मामले इन्हीं दो पंक्तियों से तय हुए, और किसी से नहीं।

Rule change at photo 172. Photos 1 to 171: a brand logo in Latin letters, like a paint or tea brand, counted as Latin. So a Marathi board with one such logo is labelled both. From photo 172 onward: a logo alone does not count; only the shop's own words do. This came from the project's answer to my question on 8 September. Photos 1 to 171 were NOT relabelled. 23 of them carry 'both' only because of a logo; their numbers are listed at the end of this sheet.

तस्वीर 172 पर नियम बदला। तस्वीरें 1 से 171: रोमन अक्षरों वाला ब्रांड का लोगो, जैसे पेंट या चाय का ब्रांड, रोमन गिना गया। इसलिए ऐसे एक लोगो वाला मराठी बोर्ड ‘दोनों’ लिखा गया। तस्वीर 172 से आगे: सिर्फ़ लोगो नहीं गिना जाता; दुकान के अपने शब्द ही गिने जाते हैं। यह प्रोजेक्ट के 8 सितंबर के जवाब से आया, मेरे सवाल पर। तस्वीरें 1 से 171 दोबारा लेबल नहीं की गईं। उनमें से 23 पर ‘दोनों’ सिर्फ़ लोगो की वजह से है; उनके नंबर इस पन्ने के आख़िर में हैं।

Unsure cases, 5. Photo 41: board half hidden by a tarpaulin, name readable only from the letters showing; labelled readable, could be no. Photo 96: hand-painted Devanagari with English words spelt in Devanagari; labelled Devanagari, could be both. Photos 118, 203 and 289: night photos, readable on the phone screen but not from the road. Labelled no, could be yes.

संदेह वाले मामले, 5। तस्वीर 41: बोर्ड आधा तिरपाल से ढका, नाम सिर्फ़ दिखते अक्षरों से पढ़ा गया; पढ़ने लायक लिखा, नहीं भी हो सकता है। तस्वीर 96: हाथ से रंगी देवनागरी, जिसमें अंग्रेज़ी शब्द देवनागरी में लिखे हैं; देवनागरी लिखा, दोनों भी हो सकता है। तस्वीरें 118, 203 और 289: रात की तस्वीरें, फ़ोन की स्क्रीन पर पढ़ी जा सकती हैं पर सड़क से नहीं। नहीं लिखा, हाँ भी हो सकता है।

Open questions, 3. Does English spelt in Devanagari count as Devanagari or both? Should a night photo be judged from the road at night, or from the photo? Should photos 1 to 171 be relabelled for the logo rule before the set is built?

खुले सवाल, 3। देवनागरी में लिखी अंग्रेज़ी देवनागरी गिनी जाए या दोनों? रात की तस्वीर रात में सड़क से आँकी जाए, या तस्वीर से? क्या सेट बनने से पहले तस्वीरें 1 से 171 लोगो वाले नियम पर दोबारा लेबल की जाएँ?

One more change of mind, apart from the logo rule. From about photo 60 I stopped counting a shop's phone number as Latin script. Photos 1 to 59 may carry 'both' for a number alone. I found 4 and list them with the 23.

लोगो वाले नियम के अलावा एक और राय बदली। लगभग तस्वीर 60 से मैंने दुकान के फ़ोन नंबर को रोमन लिपि गिनना बंद कर दिया। तस्वीरें 1 से 59 में सिर्फ़ नंबर की वजह से ‘दोनों’ हो सकता है। मुझे 4 मिलीं और वे 23 के साथ सूची में हैं।

Questions the next person asked after reading it, 13 September. One: are the 23 and the 4 listed separately, so both rules can be applied? They were together; I split the list into two. Two: for the night photos, which phone was used? Added the phone model to the first paragraph. No question came back about where the rule changed.

अगले व्यक्ति ने पढ़कर जो सवाल पूछे, 13 सितंबर। एक: क्या 23 और 4 अलग-अलग सूची में हैं, ताकि दोनों नियम अलग लगाए जा सकें? वे साथ थे; मैंने सूची दो हिस्सों में बाँट दी। दो: रात की तस्वीरों के लिए कौन-सा फ़ोन इस्तेमाल हुआ? फ़ोन का मॉडल पहले अनुच्छेद में जोड़ा। नियम कहाँ बदला, इस पर कोई सवाल नहीं आया।

Batch note for the project lead. 350 signboard photos from Sangli, done between 4 and 12 September, about two evenings a week. The labelling app crashed twice on the night photos and I lost about an hour. That is why it ran to the 12th.

प्रोजेक्ट के अगुवा के लिए बैच का नोट। सांगली की बोर्ड की 350 तस्वीरें, 4 से 12 सितंबर के बीच, हफ़्ते में लगभग दो शामें। रात की तस्वीरों पर लेबल वाला ऐप दो बार बंद हुआ और लगभग एक घंटा गया। इसीलिए काम 12 तारीख़ तक चला।

Rules: script by the letters on the board, guideline line 2. Readable if someone across the road could read the name, line 5. Followed throughout.

नियम: बोर्ड के अक्षरों से लिपि, दिशानिर्देश की पंक्ति 2। सड़क के उस पार से नाम पढ़ा जा सके तो पढ़ने लायक, पंक्ति 5। पूरे बैच में यही माने।

Unsure: photo 41, a board half under a tarpaulin, and photo 96, English words painted in Devanagari. A few night photos were hard to call; I went with what I could read on the phone.

संदेह: तस्वीर 41, आधा तिरपाल के नीचे बोर्ड, और तस्वीर 96, देवनागरी में रंगे अंग्रेज़ी शब्द। रात की कुछ तस्वीरें तय करना मुश्किल था; जो फ़ोन पर पढ़ पाया, उसी से गया।

Logo rule: partway through, the answer came that a brand logo alone does not count as Latin. I stopped counting logos from then on. Earlier photos were labelled the old way. Happy to go back over them if needed. No open questions from my side; everything else was clear.

लोगो वाला नियम: बीच में जवाब आया कि सिर्फ़ ब्रांड का लोगो रोमन नहीं गिना जाएगा। तब से मैंने लोगो गिनना बंद कर दिया। पहले की तस्वीरें पुराने तरीके से लेबल हुई हैं। ज़रूरत हो तो उन पर लौटने को तैयार हूँ। मेरी तरफ़ से कोई सवाल खुला नहीं; बाकी सब साफ़ था।

Questions the next person asked after reading it: from which photo number does the new logo rule apply? Which night photos were the hard ones? Were phone numbers on boards counted as Latin? I had to go back through the batch to answer the first two.
