Compare two ways of receiving one foreign payment, and keep the papers each one produces.
Money sent from outside Bharat has to reach a bank here within a set time. The bank records why it came. Three rails carry this work's money. A platform payout service such as Tipalti or Payoneer gives a payout statement. The bank paper must be asked for, from the bank that paid the money in. A transfer service such as Wise gives a receipt with the rate and the fee. Its partner bank issues the bank paper on request. A direct SWIFT transfer goes from the buyer's bank to yours. Your bank asks for the purpose code and the invoice before crediting it, and issues the paper itself. On the Reserve Bank's list, read on 14 Sep 2026, data work sits nearest P0803, data processing charges. Coding work sits under P0802, software consultancy. Tell the bank what the work is, and check which code it recorded.
- Your bank asks why the money came, and that reason is the purpose code.
- The real cost is the exchange rate plus the fee, not the fee alone.
- Keep the papers the bank sends after a foreign payment; tax records start there.
TaskA buyer abroad will pay one invoice for data work by a transfer service or a direct bank transfer. You must choose.
Weak approach Reads both fee pages and picks the transfer service, because its fee is smaller and its rate is shown. Gives the buyer the account details the same evening, and the money lands in two days. Leaves the purpose code box on the service's form at its default, because the money came anyway. Keeps the service's receipt and nothing from the bank.
Stronger approach Asks each rail for the same thing: the rupees that would land from this one invoice, after rate and fee. Here the direct transfer lands less, because two banks each take a charge on the way. Picks the transfer service, then asks its partner bank for the inward remittance paper, which it does not send unasked. Writes P0803 as the purpose, since the invoice is for data work. Files the receipt, the bank paper and the invoice together, with the day each rate was read.
Why the stronger approach works A poorer exchange rate can take more than any fee would. It never appears on the page as a cost at all. The hurried attempt lost twice more. The code the bank recorded was not its work, and no bank paper exists to show.
Try a changed situation One service shows a small flat fee and another shows no fee at all but a poorer rate. How should you compare them?
