Read the licence and the card before the download. Open does not always mean free to use for money.
You want to put a small open model inside a paid service for a shop. The page says open. What do you check?
Why this matters
A model card is a plain file carrying the licence, the material it was trained on, and the stated limits. Open describes the weights. It is not a promise about what you may do. The terms line names a family, and five families cover most cards you will meet. Apache-2.0 and MIT allow paid use with few conditions. AI4Bharat's IndicTrans2 card says MIT, read on 14 Sep 2026. Llama Community and Gemma Terms are each company's own conditions, which you must read. Gemma 3 sits under Gemma Terms while Gemma 4 moved to Apache-2.0, read on 14 Sep 2026. Research-only or non-commercial terms forbid paid use outright. So the line on the card you are downloading is the only one that counts.
