Write for a stranger who has your access and none of your memory. Name the three things that break most often and how each one looks from outside. A note nobody else has followed in front of you is a draft. Task You run a weekly workflow that pulls orders out of e-mail. You will be away for two weeks.
Weak approach Writes the steps in the order you do them, using your own short names for each folder. A line at the bottom says to call if anything breaks, and nobody else has opened it.
Stronger approach Writes the steps and the three usual breakages. Then watches a colleague run it once and writes down where they got stuck.
Why the stronger approach works The strong one was followed by somebody else in the room. That is the only way the steps still in your head show up.
